Sometimes Hope is the Most Extraordinary Gift of All.

High-school radio host Jasmine Torres's life is full of family dysfunction, but if she can score the internship of her dreams with a New York City radio station, she knows she can turn things around.

That is, until her brother Danny’s latest seizure forces her to miss the interview, and she’s back to the endless loop of missing school for his doctor appointments, picking up the pieces of her mother’s booze-soaked life, and stressing about Danny’s future.

Then she meets Wes. He’s the perfect combination of smart, cute, and funny. He also happens to have epilepsy like her brother. Wes is living a normal life despite his medical issues, which gives Jasmine hope for Danny. But memories of her cheating ex-boyfriend keep her from going on a real date with Wes, no matter how many times he asks her.

Jasmine can’t control everything. Not who wins the internship, not her mother’s addiction, not her brother’s health--not even where her heart will lead her. She wishes she could just have an ordinary life, but maybe what she already has is pretty extraordinary after all.

Welcome to my stop for This Ordinary Life blog tour! My stop features a playlist that I think suits the book really well!

  1. Welcome to New York by Taylor Swift

    It’s a new soundtrack
I could dance to this beat, beat
    Forever more
    The lights are so bright
But they never blind me, me
    Welcome to New York
    It’s been waiting for you
    Welcome to New York

The whole time I was reading This Ordinary Life this song keeps popping in my head.  Maybe it’s because Jasmine is this super driven teenager who works hard for her dream-to intern at a New York City radio station. I related to her a lot because I want to work in New York too (who doesn’t?)!

  1. I’m Only Me When I’m With You by Taylor Swift

And sometimes we don’t say a thing
Just listen to the crickets sing
Everything I need is right here by my side

And I know everything about you
I don’t wanna live without you

I’m only up when you’re not down
Don’t wanna fly if you’re still on the ground
It’s like no matter what I do

Well, you drive me crazy half the time
The other half I’m only trying
To let you know that what I feel is true
And I’m only me when I’m with you

I like the banter between Wes and Jasmine; I think it really captures the way teenagers fall in like, or even in love with each other. They have jokes between them, light, casual conversation and of course, the underlying flirtation. 😉 I noticed that Wes and Jasmine enjoys their time together and that’s when they really become their selves.

  1. Dangerous by The Vamps

Met a girl and she is dangerous,
Don’t quite know her, but I just can’t get enough
    I’m struck
    She’s gonna tear me up.
A million voices telling me to never give you up.
Shouldn’t listen, I’m addicted to this darker love.
And this is dangerous, for me.

Wes and Jasmine are dangerous for each other, I think. Well, Wes really likes Jasmine but she just came out of a break-up and isn’t looking for any romance at the moment. Jasmine has a young brother who suffers from epilepsy, Wes had it too when he was younger and haven’t had a seizure for years. Still, Jasmine is afraid that both her favorite boys will have seizures at the same time and she feels she can’t do anything about it.

  1. 50 Ways to Say Goodbye by Train

That’s cool, but if my friends ask where you are I’m gonna say

She went down in an airplane
    Fried getting suntanned
Fell in a cement mixer full of quicksand
Help me, help me, I’m no good at goodbyes!
She met a shark under water
Fell and no one caught her
I returned everything I ever bought her
Help me, help me, I’m all out of lies
And ways to say you died

Sebastian, Jasmine’s ex is a real asshole and I wish all the horrible things that were mentioned in this song would happen to him too! *insert evil laugh here*

  1. Dancing With A Wolf by All Time Low

Who’s gonna listen when you run out of lies?
Who’s gonna hear you, when your words seem worthless?
Who’s gonna save you when you’re out of time?
And who’s gonna want you, when you’re on your knees, begging:

“Oh, please take me at my word, I’m desperate
I swear, I never meant to hurt no one, no
Oh, please stay for what it’s worth, I’m desperate”
    You’re on your own

Sebastian tried to get back with Jasmine but good thing, Jasmine didn’t listen to anymore of his lies. I really admire her for it because I know it takes a lot of self-control not to get back with the person you’ve been in a relationship with for a so long.

That’s it! Have you read This Ordinary Life? Do you think these songs really suit the book?
